Do I need to know every foreign word before I sit down at a table?
No. Ten or twelve words are enough to start; look up the rest in the help when they appear. One rule matters: if a term sits next to a button that moves money, understand it first and click second.
We grouped the terms by where you will meet them.
Words around the wheel: six roulette terms
| Term | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Call bet | A preset group of numbers on one section of the wheel. | Placed on the oval area known as the racetrack. |
| En Prison | On zero, the stake goes ‘to prison’ until the next spin. | If it wins next round, you get the stake back. |
| Even-money bet | A bet on half the wheel: colour, odd/even, or low/high. | Pays 1:1 and loses on zero (unless a French rule applies). |
| Inside and outside bets | Inside: on numbers in the grid; outside: dozens, columns, colours. | A chip on 17 is an inside bet. |
| La Partage | When zero lands, you recover half of an even-money stake. | 10 EUR on red, zero lands: 5 EUR returned. |
| Single- and double-zero wheel | 37 or 38 pockets. | European 2.70%, American 5.26% house edge. |
The logic behind the numbers is set out in roulette basics.
Cards in hand: eight blackjack expressions
| Term | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Double down | Doubling your stake in exchange for exactly one more card. | A 10 EUR bet becomes 20 EUR. |
| Hard hand | A hand with no ace counted as 11. | 10 + 7 = hard 17. |
| Hit / stand | Ask for a card, or stop. | Many hit on 12 and stand on 19. |
| Insurance | An extra wager that the dealer’s ace hides a blackjack. | Offered when the dealer shows an ace. |
| Push | A tie: your stake comes back, no win, no loss. | You 20, dealer 20. |
| Shoe and S17/H17 | The shoe holds several decks; S17: dealer stands on soft 17, H17: dealer hits. | Printed on the felt or in the help. |
| Soft hand | A hand where the ace counts as 11 but can switch to 1. | Ace + 6 = soft 17. |
| Split | Separating two matching cards into two hands, with an extra stake. | Two 8s become two hands. |
How these choices shift the house edge is shown in blackjack basics.
Baccarat: four words printed on the betting area
| Term | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Commission | The cut taken from Banker wins; the table help states the rate. | On a no-commission table the payout changes elsewhere. |
| Natural | 8 or 9 points from the first two cards; the round ends there. | 6 + 3 = natural 9. |
| Player, Banker, Tie | The two hands and the tie: the three things you bet on. | You put your chip on Banker. |
| Third-card rule | A fixed chart deciding when a hand draws a third card. | You do not decide; the rule does. |
Studio language: seven expressions from the edge of the screen
| Term | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Bet behind | Backing the hand of someone seated at the table, whose choices you cannot influence. | You can join even when the table is full. |
| Betting window | The countdown while the table accepts bets. | At zero the buttons grey out. |
| Dealer / croupier | The studio staff member who spins the wheel or deals. | Has no influence on the outcome. |
| Delay | The few seconds’ lag between the studio and your screen. | On a weak connection the picture stalls, the round does not. |
| Results bar | A list of recent round outcomes. | Past data, not a forecast. |
| Side bet | A separate, optional bet next to the main game, with its own payout. | In blackjack, a pair in your first two cards. |
| Table limit | The minimum and maximum stake at that table. | Shown on the table tile or in the help. |
The Dukat.bet live section has its own offer too (Live Casino Bonus – 500% up to 3,000 EUR + 15% Cashback); related words such as contribution are explained in the bonus terms lesson. How a live round runs: live dealer games.
Three words beginners regularly get wrong
| What many people believe | What is actually true | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| Insurance protects you from losing. | A separate bet that pays only if the dealer has blackjack, with its own house edge. | Compare its payout in the help with the odds. |
| A push is the same as a loss. | In a tie your stake comes back. | Look at your history: the stake returns to your balance. |
| The results bar shows the trend. | The bar only shows the past; the next round is independent. | Write down twenty results and compare them with the next twenty. |
Decode the screen: the vocabulary of a made-up blackjack round
Practice exercise with made-up numbers – not Dukat.bet data:
The felt says ‘S17’. You bet 10 EUR. You get an ace and a 6; the dealer shows a 5. You double and receive a 4. The dealer reveals a 6, then draws a 10. Name the terms and say what comes back.
Solution. Ace + 6 was soft 17; doubling made it 20 EUR for exactly one card: ace + 6 + 4 = 21. The dealer has 5 + 6 + 10 = 21, a hard 21. That is a push: the 20 EUR comes back, with no profit and no loss.
Five words to save in your phone notes
- La Partage / En Prison – lowers the price of zero on even-money bets.
- Push – a tie; the stake comes back.
- Insurance – a separate bet, not protection.
- Betting window – at zero your bet no longer goes in.
- Table limit – read it from the help, not from habit.
