Once the bonus round finally lands, will I surely win my money back?
No. A bonus round is a different set of rules on the same machine, and the outcome is still settled by the random number generator. It can pay many times your stake or less than your bet. Both are normal.
The myth comes from rarity: we tend to feel that something rare has been ‘earned’. Yet the machine keeps no record of your wait. Its value is a slice of the game's theoretical return, built in by the studio in advance. It is neither a reward nor compensation.
So the short answer: a bonus can bring big swings, but it promises nothing.
Scatters, fruit wins, coins: how the machine knows the extra is coming
In most slots the bonus is started by a trigger event. Most often this is a certain number of scatter symbols anywhere on the reels. In Red Tiger's Wings of Ra Megaways, for example, 3 scatters award 10 free spins and 4 scatters award 15, according to the studio's description.
On some machines the trigger is itself a win. In NetEnt's Fruit Shop Frenzy, a fruit win awards 2 free spins with a multiplier trail from ×1 to ×5, and Frenzy Mode can extend that to as many as 10 steps. Here, ordinary wins open the door instead of a special symbol.
What triggers the bonus on a given machine is set out in the rules part of the paytable. New to these? The lesson on reading a paytable line by line will help.
Four building blocks that most bonus rounds are made of
Bonus rounds look varied, but most use the same few parts.
Free spins. Spins that take no new stake from your balance: they play out at the bet of the spin that triggered them. The reel set often differs or carries more special symbols, so they pay differently from the base game.
Multiplier. It multiplies a win by a number. It can be fixed, grow with every win, or come several in a row. In NetEnt's The Wish Master Megaways, the 2× and 3× multipliers can be active at the same time, and together they give 6×.
Upgraded wild. A wild normally substitutes for other symbols, but in the bonus round it can gain an extra power: it fills a whole reel, appears at random, or stacks. The Wish Master's lamp picks one of four features (Extra Wild, Wild Reel, multiplier, Random Wilds), keeps at most three active at once, and each one lasts no more than 5 spins.
Respin. One or more reels spin again while the other positions stay locked. In ‘Hold and Respin’ style rounds a counter usually runs and resets whenever a new symbol lands; the round lasts until the counter runs out.
There is one thing none of these blocks changes: chance stays chance.
What people say about bonus rounds, and what the info panel says
| What many people believe | What is actually true | How to check it |
|---|---|---|
| ‘After a long wait the bonus will be bigger.’ | Every spin is independent; the length of the wait does not matter. | Note down the results of ten bonus rounds and the number of spins before each one. You will not find a link. |
| ‘Free spins are free, so there is no risk.’ | The value of free spins comes from the triggering bet, and you paid for every spin until the trigger. | At the end of the round, compare the win with the triggering bet. |
| ‘The max win is what the bonus usually pays.’ | The max win is a ceiling, not an average. Wings of Ra Megaways has a ceiling of 20,000×, a rare exception. | On the info panel, look for the volatility next to the max win. |
| ‘A bought bonus is better than an earned one.’ | It is the same round, only delivered at once and paid for in advance. | In the rules, see whether the bought and the triggered round are described the same way. |
On the third row: the ceiling published by the studio is 10,868× for Fruit Shop Frenzy and 27,018× for the Wish Master. These figures show how far a round can go, not where it usually ends up. You can read more about spread in the lesson on volatility and hit rate.
A bought round at an upfront price: the maths behind the buy button
In some slots there is no need to wait for the trigger: you can buy the bonus round straight away. The price is given as a multiple of the base bet. In Fruit Shop Frenzy the buy costs 20× the bet, while Wings of Ra Megaways offers two buys: Free Spins for 100× the bet and Mega Free Spins for 200×. The Wish Master Megaways, like many other machines, does not sell a bonus at all.
A buy is one big bet. At 100×, a single click risks as much as a hundred base spins, but you get one round instead, good or poor.
With bonus money, one more point applies. Point 2.7 of the general bonus rules at Dukat.bet sets a default maximum bet of 5 EUR while you wager, unless a specific offer says otherwise, and what you pay for a bought round is included in that limit. For slots, Dukat.bet runs the Slots Bonus – 500% up to 3,000 EUR + 15% Cashback. Its terms are explained in the lesson that explains bonus terms.
Practice exercise with made-up numbers – not Dukat.bet data:
Say you are wagering a bonus and the default 5 EUR cap applies. Does the buy fit?
| Game and buy | Price | Base bet | Buy cost | Fits within 5 EUR? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wings of Ra Megaways – Free Spins | 100× | 0.10 EUR (studio minimum) | 10 EUR | no |
| Wings of Ra Megaways – Mega Free Spins | 200× | 0.10 EUR | 20 EUR | no |
| Fruit Shop Frenzy | 20× | 0.25 EUR | 5 EUR | just fits |
| Fruit Shop Frenzy | 20× | 0.40 EUR | 8 EUR | no |
Solution: the largest base bet at which the buy still fits is 5 EUR ÷ the price multiplier. For Fruit Shop Frenzy that is 5 ÷ 20 = 0.25 EUR. For Wings of Ra it would come to 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05 EUR, which is below the studio's 0.10 EUR minimum bet, so neither buy fits there while you are wagering a bonus. We have not checked Dukat.bet's own bet limits for these machines, so look at the game's bet selector in the lobby as well.
Where to find a machine's bonus rules before you put money on it
The info panel (an ‘i’ or menu icon inside the game) almost always has a separate page for the bonus: the trigger condition, the number of free spins, the multipliers and, if there is one, the buy price. The RTP line is there too. The RTP of the version running on Dukat.bet cannot be seen from outside, so always read it inside the game itself.
According to the lobby, the games listed here appear to be available in demo mode as well, so confirm that before you launch one. That way you can watch a full bonus round without a stake and see why each thing happens.
Five lines for your notebook before you start the next bonus round
- The trigger: what starts the bonus on this machine (scatter, win, coin)?
- The building blocks: free spins, multiplier, upgraded wild or respin – which ones are included?
- The ceiling: what is the max win, and what volatility goes with it?
- The buy price: if there is a button, how many times the bet is it, and how many euros is that at my stake?
- With bonus money: does the buy fit under the default 5 EUR cap, or does the offer set something else?
With these noted, move on to demo mode and test what you wrote down without a stake.
