Slot machine terms, each with an example

A slot’s info panel is full of English words, each hiding a rule. Here are 22 of them in alphabetical order, each with a mini example from a real game.

Do I really need to know what a scatter is before I start a slot?

You can spin without knowing any of it, but then you cannot see what a bonus round costs you, how far your balance may swing, or what the machine never pays. The words will not help you win; they show you what you are paying into.

No need to learn them all at once: before a new game, pick the three or four terms in its info panel and look them up here. The figures in the examples come from the studios’ official websites (11 October 2026).

From the base game to Hold and Respin: the first seven words

Term Meaning Example
Base game The ordinary spins outside the bonus round. Of Double Stacks’ RTP, 67.3 points come from the base game and 28.8 from the bonus.
Bonus buy You buy the bonus round instantly for a multiple of your stake. Fruit Shop Frenzy: for 20× the stake.
Cluster pays A group of touching identical symbols pays, not a line. Dragons Clusterbuster, on a 9×9 grid.
Free spin A bonus round whose spins are not deducted from your balance. 777 Strike: three scatters award 7 free spins, up to 21 in total.
Gamble (doubling) You risk a win again: it grows or you lose it. Good Old 7's Bonus Wheel comes with a gamble option.
Hit rate The share of spins with any win, even one below the stake. Double Stacks: 16.00%.
Hold and Respin Special symbols stay put while the other positions respin. In Trillionaire Megaways the counter resets to 3 when a new symbol lands.

With a bonus, note point 2.7 of Dukat.bet’s general rules: the default maximum bet while wagering is 5 EUR, bought bonus rounds and doubling included. Details: the bonus terms lesson.

From cascade to paytable: the middle eight

Term Meaning Example
Cascade Winning symbols vanish and new ones drop in. Dragons Clusterbuster: the chain reaction cracks the egg in the middle.
Info panel The game’s help section: rules, payouts, RTP. Check here first for any unfamiliar word.
Jackpot A top prize, fixed or progressive. Trillionaire Megaways, fixed: Mini 25×, Mega 10,000× the stake.
Max win The most a round can pay, as a multiple of the stake. Willy's Hot Chillies: 1,000×.
Megaways Big Time Gaming’s mechanic: symbol count varies per reel. Up to 117,649 ways, e.g. in What The Fox Megaways.
Multiplier Multiplies the win or the number of ways. What The Fox: three 7× wilds make 343×.
Payline A fixed path along which identical symbols pay. 777 Strike: 10 lines.
Paytable Which symbol pays how much for how many of a kind. Five symbols at 10× on a 0.50 EUR stake pay 5 EUR (made-up value).

Point 2.15 removes jackpot slots from wagering. Whether Dukat.bet counts Trillionaire Megaways among them, we do not know – see the exclusion list.

From RNG to wild: the last seven

Term Meaning Example
RNG Random number generator; every spin is independent. Fifty empty rounds say nothing about the next.
RTP The share of stakes that theoretically comes back in the long run. Double Stacks 96.10%: it promises nothing for a single evening.
RTP version The same game can run at several RTP levels. Dukat.bet’s version is not public; the info panel shows it.
Scatter Counts regardless of lines and usually triggers a bonus. 777 Strike: only on reels 1, 3 and 5.
Volatility Whether a machine pays big but rarely, or small but often. On the studios’ scales: Medium, High, Extreme, Insane – a ‘low’ step does not exist.
Ways The symbol just needs to land somewhere on neighbouring reels. Good Old 7's: 3×3×3×3×3 = 243 ways.
Wild A substitute symbol; it usually does not replace the scatter. Fruit Shop Frenzy: only on reels 2–4.

The house edge lesson works through RTP; hit rate versus variance is in the lesson on hit rate. A good counterexample is Dragons Clusterbuster: a 35.04% hit rate, yet Extreme volatility.

When the name promises more than the rule

What many people believe What is actually true How to check it
High hit rate = lots of winnings. Wins come often, frequently below the stake. Write down fifty demo spins.
Max win is a target you can reach. It is a ceiling on paper, not what you should expect. Multiply your stake by it.
A ‘High RTP’ label is RTP data. It is just a label; in the lobby it even sits on a 96.00% game. Read the figure off the info panel.

Labels sell; the info panel rules.

Work out the ways and the ceiling of a made-up slot

Practice exercise with made-up numbers – not Dukat.bet data:

A six-reel slot stops like this: 2, 4, 3, 5, 6 and 7 symbols. The max win is 5,000×, and your stake is 0.40 EUR. How many ways were there, and what is the ceiling?

Solution: 2 × 4 × 3 × 5 × 6 × 7 = 5,040 ways. The ceiling is 0.40 × 5,000 = 2,000 EUR – and no multiplier wild changes that.

For the back of your notebook: four slot words in your own words

  • Your next game’s RTP, volatility and max win, on one line.
  • Lines, ways or cluster pays?
  • The bonus buy price multiplied by your base stake.
  • One sentence on how a wild differs from a scatter.

Next up: reading the paytable, where these words appear on a real info panel.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a free spin and a respin?
Free spins are a bonus round of several spins; a respin usually re-spins a few reels inside a feature. The info panel settles it for each machine.
Can a wild stand in for a scatter?
Usually not, but games differ – read the wild’s description.
Why does one game list lines and another ways?
The winning condition differs: lines need a fixed path, ways only adjacent reels. 777 Strike pays on 10 lines, Good Old 7's on 243 ways.
Where does Insane sit on the volatility scale?
At the top of Red Tiger’s own scale (e.g. Wings of Ra Megaways): long dry spells, rare bigger wins. It does not promise any profit.
If a slot has a bigger max win, does it also pay back more?
Not necessarily. Trillionaire Megaways has a ceiling of 35,841×, Willy's Hot Chillies 1,000×, yet their RTPs are close: 96.68% and 96.00%.
